In Nigeria’s Adamawa state, only 10 out of 5,000 rape cases are prosecuted: UN Agency

YOLA, Nigeria (The Informant247) – Only 10 out of 5,000 rape cases recorded in Nigeria’s Adamawa state in 2021 were prosecuted, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said.

The poor prosecution of rape cases, according to Ulla Mueller, UNFPA’s Resident Representative, who was represented by Chris Sabum, Head of the North East, was caused by lack of evidence.

Muller disclosed that they had unveiled a forensic lab at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Yola where verifications of samples from perpetrators would be investigated as evidence for court cases.

The Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Saso Benson Ali, appreciated the efforts made by UNFPA and Spotlight Initiative for the forensic lab, adding that with the forensic lab, more perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted in the court of law.
