‘I’m still in charge!’ Eguavoen denies stepping down as Super Eagles coach
Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has dismissed rumours that he has stepped down from his position, stating that he remains fully in charge of the Nigerian national football team.
In response to the circulating reports about he has stepped down from his role as the Super Eagles boss, given his remark that he was only given a mandate for two games (Benin Republic and Rwanda), Eguavoen expressed concern over the spread of false information, stressing the need for focus during this critical period.
“It’s quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct, and the situation we’re in now, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen told Pius Idoko in an interview after landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
He clarified that his earlier comments had been misunderstood and that any discussions regarding his future with the team would happen after their next set of matches.
“I only talked about how I’m gonna sit down with the hierarchy of the Federation after these two games, and then we’ll see how we go about prosecuting the next games. But when I saw that story, I was kind of worried and concerned,” Eguavoen explained.
“Whatever people are reading out there is not correct. I’m still very much in charge.”
The call of duty fell on Eguavoen who is also the Technical Director of the NFF after the failure of the deal between the NFF and German Coach Bruno Labbadia.
