Ilorin Central Mosque c’ttee hails Saliu Mustapha over solar power intervention

The Ilorin Central Jum’mat Mosque has begun operating an ultramodern solar-powered mini-grid system, a development set to revolutionize energy use at the historic place of worship.

The project, which also benefits parts of the Ilorin palace and the wider Muslim community, was facilitated by Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central Senatorial District.

According to a statement signed on Wednesday by Alhaji Sheu Gafar, Danmadami of Ilorin Emirate and Chairman of the Central Working Committee of the mosque, the installation is part of a broader effort to modernize mosque operations and reduce reliance on conventional electricity.

“This is a landmark achievement for the Central Mosque and a major step towards sustainable energy use,” the statement read.

The mosque management had earlier requested the solar project during its annual Board of Trustees meeting, and Senator Mustapha’s commitment to deliver on the pledge has now come to fruition.

“We express profound gratitude to Senator Mustapha for honoring his promise and supporting the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Ilorin Emirate,” Gafar noted in the statement.

With the mini-grid system in place, the mosque will now operate almost entirely on renewable energy, significantly lowering monthly electricity expenses.

“The mosque will now function primarily on clean solar energy, except for the air conditioning units, which remain on the main grid,” the statement added.

Beyond cost savings, the uninterrupted power supply will allow the mosque to remain illuminated day and night. “For the first time, the mosque will shine around the clock, allowing residents, worshippers, and tourists to behold its majesty in full glory,” Gafar said.

The solar mini-grid project complements another major development for the mosque: a pledge of over ₦1 billion from a private donor to construct a 250-bed modern hostel at the University of Ilorin.

“Together, these projects demonstrate a blend of faith, foresight, and innovation that will benefit the community for generations,” Gafar emphasized.

The Ilorin Central Mosque Management Committee noted that these developments align with the vision of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, to make the mosque a self-sustaining institution.

“Our aim is a mosque that not only serves as a sanctuary of worship but also as a beacon of resilience, unity, and innovation,” Gafar stated.

The committee hailed the collaboration between the Emirate, Senator Mustapha, and the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, as a historic milestone that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. “We are grateful for the partnership that has brought this vision to reality,” the statement read.

Alhaji Gafar stressed that the mosque will continue to serve as both a spiritual sanctuary and a symbol of unity within the Emirate, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the dignity and operational excellence of this iconic institution. “The Central Mosque remains a symbol of our faith and collective heritage,” he said.

The projects, according to the statement, represent a fusion of foresight, faith, and innovation, positioning the Ilorin Central Mosque not just as a place of worship, but also as a beacon for sustainable community development.

“This legacy will inspire generations yet unborn and stand as proof that faith and modern innovation can uplift an entire community,” Gafar concluded.
