IGP Egbetokun directs immediate withdrawal of mobile police officers from VIPs

Olukayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has directed the immediate withdrawal of police mobile force (PMF) personnel from providing security for private individuals across Nigeria.

This directive was communicated during a recent conference with PMF squadron commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, as stated by Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson.

Egbetokun underscored the importance of the PMF as the “elite tactical arm of the police,” emphasizing the need for the unit to concentrate on its primary mandate of swiftly responding to riots, emergencies, and violent threats.

The IGP criticized the assignment of PMF operatives to escort and guard duties for VIPs and private citizens, labeling it a “distortion that weakens operational effectiveness.” To enhance the capabilities of the PMF, he introduced a series of reforms that include quarterly training on ethics and professionalism and the requirement for fully equipped, combat-ready teams to be maintained in all squadrons.

Egbetokun stated, “Commanders will be held accountable for the conduct of their personnel,” and urged proactive leadership through inspections, training, and mentorship.

These reforms aim to restore discipline, uphold human rights, and improve operational standards to align with global best practices.

Egbetokun reconfirmed the force’s commitment to making the PMF a “disciplined and dependable tactical arm” of the police, expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support and acknowledging the role of international partners in boosting the force’s technical abilities.

The IGP, however, called on all PMF commanders to view these reforms as a “professional and moral responsibility.”
