I won’t run away, I’ll honour EFCC’s invitation — Wike

Any government that can’t protect lives, properties has failed – Wike The Informant247

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has said he would not run away from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, after hands over to the next Governor of the state, May 29.

He said he would honour the invitation of the anti-graft agency at the conclusion of his tenure on May 29.

This came as a reaction to the recent revelations made by the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, that the anti-graft agency would apprehend corrupt governors at the conclusion of their tenures on May 29.

While granting a television interview on Monday March 27, the Governor said he’s not moved by the revelations made by the EFCC.

“I’m not going to run away because of EFCC. Why should they invite me? If they invite me, I will honour their invitation. I will not run away,” Wike said.

The Informant247 earlier reported that the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has said that the anti-graft agency under his watch will start arresting some corrupt governors when they leave office on May 29.

The Chairman made this revelation in an interview in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The Chairman did not reveal the identities of the corrupt governors on the commission’s list — who stand the chance of being arrested after May 29.

“And God willing, come May and June, we are going to make some huge arrests and commence huge prosecutions of people.

“And for those people that are not leaving in May, whenever they are leaving, we will be waiting for them to ensure that justice is done,” he said.

While speaking on his removal, the chairman said the anti-graft agency would not allow itself to be intimidated.

He said he’s first EFCC boss to be taken to court and testify.

“And there is a stay of execution, what do you expect? We move on!

“How many of our cases were lost? We lost 41 and we got 3,785. What is there? What are we talking about? Who is losing? Who is not losing? Nobody is losing and nobody is winning. But it is like that!

“It happened in 2007, it happened in 2011, it happened in 2015, it happened in 2019 and it is happening in 2023. We’re students of history.

“People are just trying to tell the incoming government that they need to change the chairman, maybe because the chairman is doing the right things. It is just a question of corruption fighting back. Nothing more!

“But what they do not know is the fact that in the last couple of months, we have more than ever before tried to institutionalise the operational activities of the EFCC.

“Whether it is Bawa or not, the EFCC will continue to do those good works that they don’t want and those prosecutions we’re planning to do.”
