I won’t contest against Tinubu in 2027 – Nyesom Wike
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has confirmed that he will not run against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Wike stated, “I will not contest again. I cannot contest against someone I am working with. Who will win except him?” This statement highlights his belief that no politician can effectively challenge Tinubu in the upcoming election.
The comments come as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is engaged in discussions about potentially zoning its presidential ticket to the south to better position itself against the ruling party. Wike’s previous attempt for the presidential nomination in 2022 ended in defeat to Atiku Abubakar, who went on to represent the party in the 2023 election.
Addressing the challenges within the PDP, Wike expressed frustration with certain party members, criticizing their actions and the party’s overall strategy.
He remarked, “You are in the opposition; the opposition does not show impunity. The opposition does not show arrogance, it is the ruling party that shows impunity and arrogance because they are in power.”
Wike also directed his comments at specific individuals within the party. He questioned the influence of former Imo Governor Achike Udenwa, stating, “He does not have one assembly member. He does not have one national assembly member. He did not give his party 3% of the vote, yet he is threatening.” He further challenged the credibility of former Ebonyi Governor Saba Egu, saying, “What are you threatening about? You are empty. What are you threatening?”
