‘I was 100% loyal to Obi’ – Kenneth Okonkwo denies betrayal claims
Kenneth Okonkwo, the former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, has firmly denied allegations that he betrayed Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate during the 2023 elections.
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, Okonkwo asserted, “When I worked for him, I never consulted any politician. I am making a public statement. I never talked to any political party. I was 100% loyal.”
Following his departure from the Labour Party in July 2024, Okonkwo expressed disappointment over internal party conflicts and Obi’s failure to address them. He clearly stated that after leaving the party, he communicated his decision not to support Obi anymore.
In response to ongoing allegations of betrayal, Okonkwo challenged Obi to clarify how he feels betrayed. “I will allow Obi to be entitled to his opinion. In our religion, we don’t fight for God,” he remarked, referring to Obi’s comparison of betrayal to the biblical figure of Judas among Jesus’ disciples. He further questioned, “How can you betray somebody you are not working for?” Okonkwo also dismissed claims that he received financial support or gifts from Obi during the election campaign.
