‘I am contesting for president in 2027’ – Peter Obi declares
…presents Moghalu as LP guber candidate
In a vibrant campaign kick-off in Onitsha, Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate from the 2023 elections, officially endorsed Dr. George Moghalu as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election set for November 8, 2025.
During his address, Obi not only championed Moghalu but also reiterated his own aspirations for the presidency in 2027, declaring, “I am contesting for President in 2027, and I am serious about it.” He asserted his credibility compared to other contenders, stating, “Everyone has the right to contest, but none of them has better credentials than I do. I have the backing of senators, representatives, and others who believe in my vision.”
Encouraging the people of Anambra to rally behind Moghalu, Obi described him as capable and compassionate, qualities he deemed essential for effective governance. “Governance for me is about empathy and compassion, about caring for the poor and petty traders,” Obi stated. “Dr. Moghalu is prepared to govern with those values in mind. I urge you to support him.”
Addressing rumors of his alleged move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi clarified, “I remain a Labour Party member, as are all our members at both state and national levels,” emphasizing the coalition with ADC was solely for the 2027 elections.
Moghalu, also speaking at the event, pledged to lead with integrity. “If we begin to list everything we plan to do, we’ll sleep here,” he said, promising dedication to the people of Anambra. He assured attendees that under his leadership, crucial developments would occur, emphasizing humane tax practices: “People will pay taxes, but not with pestles.”
Senators Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Tony Nwonye (Anambra North) added their support for Moghalu, pledging to work towards ensuring the Labour Party’s success in the upcoming election. With the campaign gaining momentum, the focus now shifts to how Obi’s influence and Moghalu’s commitments will resonate with voters ahead of the 2025 gubernatorial election in Anambra.
