Gunmen’s deadly attack in Rivers leaves soldiers slain, expatriate kidnapped
Reports have emerged detailing a tragic incident that unfolded on Friday, revealing the grim reality of an attack by unidentified gunmen.
The assailants targeted soldiers stationed at the Ekaago-Ogboloma-Adada Road project within the Abia/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Tragically, two soldiers lost their lives in the line of duty as the assailants carried out their nefarious plans. The attackers further demonstrated their ruthlessness by kidnapping an expatriate worker and three additional individuals who were actively engaged in the project. The project itself had been commissioned by the state government and was well underway at the time of the incident.
The brazen assault was marked by the audacious killing of the soldiers. This horrific act not only resulted in the loss of valuable lives but also paved the way for the kidnappers to abduct the project’s foreign foreman. Shockingly, the assailants made off with the rifles belonging to the fallen soldiers, reinforcing the gravity of their criminal intent.
As the culprits fled the scene with their captives, chaos and panic ensued. Witnesses recounted hearing shots fired indiscriminately into the air as the gunmen made their escape, disappearing through a nearby river in the Akani community of Abia/Odual Local Government Area.
The immediate aftermath of the incident was marked by fear and uncertainty, causing residents of nearby Emelego, Ogboloma, and Okolomade communities to flee their homes in a bid to seek safety. The incident has left a profound impact on the affected communities, as locals grapple with the traumatic event and the unsettling knowledge that the gunmen remain at large.
Authorities have initiated investigations into the attack, aiming to apprehend those responsible and restore a sense of security to the region. However, the community’s unease persists, with residents fearing further reprisals and uncertain of what actions the authorities may take in response.
Despite efforts to gather information and receive an official statement, the spokesperson for the 6 Division, Nigeria Army, Lt.-Col Iweha Ikedishi, remains unavailable for comment. As the investigation unfolds, the community anxiously awaits updates and reassurance from the authorities.
