ABEOKUTA, Nigeria (The Informant247) – Gunmen on Thursday kidnapped three policemen in southwest state of Ogun, locals said, but a police official claimed only one cop was abducted.
The officers – led by Inspector Oladipo Olayemi – who had visited Ogun state from neigbouring Lagos state for an investigation were abducted by gunmen who waylaid them in broad daylight at Wasinmi, Ewekoro Local government area.
Sources privy to the development said the cops were duly booked at the police division in Wasinmi before they left for their place of assignment.
It was learnt that the commercial driver, who conveyed the officers escaped by a whisker.
However, a state police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi who confirmed the abduction, said “only one policeman is involved”.
“We are on the trail of the kidnappers. Do you think we are going to keep quiet? We will get them and rescue the victims unhurt,” he said.
Armed gangs have been kidnapping people for ransom from villages and on highways mainly in northwest Nigeria. However, the practice has spread to other parts of the country, thereby increasing insecurity in Africa’s most populous nation.
