Group calls for immediate reconstruction of Jos Market
The Plateau State Traders and Marketing Association has demanded that the Jos Main Market, Terminus, which was destroyed by fire in 2002, be rebuilt as soon as possible.
In addition to the flames, the ultra-modern market was struck by a dual bomb attack in 2014, leading to additional deterioration.
Mr Uthman Dafaan, the state president of the organisation, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Jos.
He stated that the gesture will aid in resolving the market’s large roadside trade as well as the possibility of tragedy such as accidents.
According to NAN, the state government razed the market in 2019 with the promise of rebuilding it soon.
He encouraged the state authorities to allow traders who had been expelled from the market to reoccupy it until the restoration began.
“The government should reach an arrangement with traders to occupy the market for one or two years until the commencement of rehabilitation work.”
“This is required so that when it comes to evicting them for the work, there will be no complications because the market has been closed with no continuous business and the roadside is crowded,” he explained.
He also advocated for the building of fire stations near the terminal market and other marketplaces across the city to ensure a quick response to emergency calls.
He stated that the new market in Jos North recently experienced fire incidents that were mitigated, and that his organisation was partnering with the fire department to prepare personnel for swift reaction prior to their arrival.
“The fire department requested that we bring members to teach them on quick reaction to fire before they arrived at such areas, which we accomplished.”
“They trained our members both last year and lately.” “We praised them for the initiative and are hoping that it would reduce market fires,” he added.
