Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has extended his condolences to the Nigerian Army and the community of Eruku in Ekiti Local Government following the passing of Major Segun Abiodun Oni, a native of the region.
Major Oni lost his life during an anti-banditry operation in Niger State.
Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his deep sympathy over the demise of Major Oni, a highly decorated and principled army officer.
Major Oni was tragically killed on August 13, 2023, alongside fellow soldiers while leading a military mission to combat banditry in parts of Niger State.
His distinguished career included roles such as Platoon Commander in the 72 Special Forces Battalion, Company Second in Command in the Armed Forces Special Forces Battalion, and Second in Command in the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Forces Battalion.
He underwent training in various military institutions across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belarus, and South Africa.
His exceptional dedication, discipline, and hard work earned him several military accolades, including the River Niger Star, Golden Jubilee Medal, Centenary Medal, and General Operations Medal.
In an official statement released by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his profound condolences to Major Oni’s family, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Defence Headquarters.
He noted that Major Oni’s passing is a substantial loss not only to the nation but also to Kwara State.
The Governor offered prayers for the repose of Major Oni’s soul and for solace to be granted to his family and all who are affected by his untimely departure.
