Fubara destroyed democracy in Rivers, APC justifies state of emergency

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, blaming Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the political crisis that led to the intervention.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accused Fubara of destroying democratic institutions in the state by demolishing the Rivers State House of Assembly and governing without a functioning legislature.

“When he brazenly demolished the Rivers State House of Assembly, Fubara destroyed the very foundation of democracy in the state. When he governed without a legislature, he ended government in the state,” the statement read.

Morka further alleged that the governor spent state funds without proper legislative approval, thereby violating the Constitution and undermining governance in Rivers State.

He argued that since all three arms of government—executive, legislature, and judiciary—must coexist for a legitimate government to exist, Fubara’s actions had rendered the state ungovernable.

The APC stated that the Supreme Court had affirmed the absence of a functional government in Rivers and that Fubara’s actions had set the stage for the emergency rule.

“The declaration of a state of emergency by President Tinubu was a necessary, constitutionally-backed measure to protect lives and property and extend governance to the good people of Rivers State,” Morka said.

He praised Tinubu for taking decisive action to prevent further chaos, stating that the president’s intervention prioritised the safety and well-being of Rivers residents over political interests.

The situation in Rivers remains tense, with heavy military presence reported around the Government House following the declaration of emergency rule.
