FPIL&D partners Lagos DSVA to render pro bono services to sexual, gender-based victims

The Foundation for Public Interest Law and Development (FPIL&D) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency to render pro bono services and legal representation to survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

In a statement made available to The Informant247 on Friday, the Foundation acknowledged the menace of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SBV) and that over one-third of women and girls globally experience some form of violence in their lifetime.

It noted however, that the rate would be higher in situations where there are no legal protections for survivors.

Highlighting how SGBV can manifest in a variety of ways, the Foundation mentioned physical violence, such as assault or slavery; emotional or psychological violence, such as verbal abuse or confinement; sexual abuse, including rape; harmful practices, like child marriage and female genital mutilation; socio-economic violence, which includes denial of resources; and sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse.

With the Memorandum of Understanding being signed, FPIL&D will facilitate free legal representation for clients referred by DSVA in matters related to Matrimonial causes, Child Custody, Welfare and Maintenance.

“We are also required to provide DSVA with quarterly updates on the progress of referred cases and ensure timely communication of urgent developments while maintaining client confidentiality and prioritizing their interests,” the Foundation said in the statement.

According to the statement, the partnership is in furtherance of our commitment to using the full strength of the law to guarantee access to justice and promote a society that works for all. “We understand that it is imminent to join hands with the DSVA to overcome negative societal norms, gender inequalities and systemic oppression of survivors of domestic and sexual violence through providing top-of-the-shelf service for which our foundation is well-reputed.”

The Lagos State Government established the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency with the mandate to provide and coordinate end-to-end response to incidents of Domestic and Sexual Violence in the State.

The Lagos DSVA, amongst other commitments, advocates for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence, raises awareness to eliminate stigmas, fosters a supportive environment and collaborates with community partners and organisations to strengthen prevention efforts.
