Former UN official got 15 years imprisonment for drugging, raping women
An ex-UN official was on Friday sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for drugging and raping unconscious women over two ten years during missions of humanitarian services in the Middle East.
The 38 year old Karim Elkorany, has sexually assaulted up to 20 women most of them close to him as friends during work trips to Egypt, Iraq and at home in the United States.
Fulbright scholars, journalists, and UN staff brutalised by were among the nine women who addressed at his Manhattan Federal Court Judgement.
They narrated that they were ignorant of details of their sexual assaults or what drugs he made use to make them unconscious.
A reporter, who was identified as victim one, and who’s 31 years old of age and happily married was raped by the convict while she’s on assignment in Kurdistan in November 2016.
She likened the life-shattering psychological trauma that followed to a cancer.
She referred to her memories of that night as “snapshots suspended in darkness.’’
“ Elkorany parks the vehicle in the garage of an apartment building, a place I never agreed to visit.
“The next memories I had was of being sexually assaulted. In the most excruciating one, I am being raped. I feel pain. I want to say no, but I can’t speak. I can’t move. I’m unable to escape.’’
When the matter was read to the convict, he pleaded guilty in May to sexual assault charges and telling lies to the FBI.
The jurist said if he had been convicted in New Jersey or Washington DC, where some of the sexual assaults happened, he would have been given life imprisonment.
“The drugging of victims was totally reckless. Mr. Elkorany made no effort to learn whether the drugs he used on his victims would cause permanent harm,’’ Buchwald said.
“I doubt that he did an analysis of the quantity versus the weight of the victim, and we know from all the letters how clearly they got more of these drugs than was necessary for his purpose, given how out of it they were for a very long period of time.’’
Assistant U.S. Attorney, Lara Pomerantz added that Elkorany made photography of his unconscious victims and transferred sexually transmitted infections to some of them because he didn’t have protected sexual intercourse with them.
U.S. Attorney, Damian Williams referred to Elkorany’s crimes as “monstrous’’ and expressed gratitude to the women who came forward.
The convict has tendered apology to his victims in court.
“I realise that words of apology will only ring hollow here today and that words of apology cannot undo the damage that I have so clearly caused,’’ he said. “And yet I am deeply, deeply sorry.’’
