Flooding: Kwara residents warned against refuse dumping in drainages

The Kwara State Government, through the State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning to residents to cease dumping waste in drainages to mitigate flooding risks.

The Acting General Manager of KWEPA, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho, made the warning during a recent inspection and community awareness campaign in Ilorin.

Hajia Folorunsho, who was represented by Mrs. Tajudeen Fasilat Feyisayo, Head of Department for Waste Management, highlighted the critical need for unimpeded drainage systems, particularly as the rainy season begins.

According to a statement by Aliyu Jamiu Amode, the ministry’s Press Secretary, Folorunsho emphasized that all buildings must have functional toilet facilities, noting that any structure without one would be sealed to prevent cholera outbreaks and other health issues.

She said the agency is dedicated to eliminating open defecation as part of its public health initiative.

“When the drainage is blocked, water will always find its way, which could lead to significant damage to lives and properties,” Folorunsho stated.

Residents are urged to collaborate with licensed waste collectors for efficient waste management and to utilize sanitary waste bins and bags to uphold cleanliness in their neighborhoods.
