Fire destroys 30 shops, goods in Ilorin market

Goods worth millions of naira were, on Friday, destroyed by fire, which wreaked havoc on over 30 shops in the popular second hand clothing ‘Okrika’ market, located along railway line, Post Office Ilorin the Kwara State capital, SOBI FM’s Dare Akogun reports.

The fire, which started from one of the shops spread to other shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.The shop owners were left in agony as a result of the loss of their property and goods.

THE INFORMANT247 learnt that no life was lost to the inferno.

Confirming the incidence, the Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Mr Yakub AbdulWaheed said the fire service got to the scene in less than three minutes it was alerted and were able to curtail the inferno that might have razed down the shops in the market.

According to him, “We received a call around 1:15am and we mobilised our men to the scene and were able to curtail the fire as soon as possible.”

He advised shop owners to always switch off all electrical appliances at the close of market for the day, saying in this harmattan period woods and fittings are very dry and can ignite fire easily.

The affected traders appealed to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulradsaq to assist them saying lot of them are indebted to banks, cooperative societies among others.
