FIFA President,Gianni Infantino has announced the intention of the body to effect an equal prize money for 2027 Women’s World Cup.
This development is coming on the heels of the calls for the need to create an equal prize money for both men and women’s mundial.
According to Infantino, the money would match the 2026 men’s World Cup by then in 2027
Already, Women’s World Cup prize money has risen from $30m in 2019 to $110m for this year’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand
There will also be an additional $40m for team preparation money and for clubs who release players.
At the men’s World Cup last year in Qatar the prize money on offer was $440m.
While the prize pool for the men’s World Cup in Qatar last year was $440m (£365m+), the cash to be split between teams is $60m (almost £50m) at the women’s tournament.
The global professional soccer players’ union( FIFPro) had earlier sent a letter signed by 150 women’s national team players to FIFA calling for equal World Cup prize money.
FIFPro says the letter, which also asks for equal treatment and conditions for women’s teams playing in soccer’s most prestigious tournament, was sent to the sport’s international governing body in October – a month before the start of the men’s World Cup in Qatar.
In 2018, FIFA announced an increase the prize money for the Women’s World Cup 2019 from $15 million to $30 million (€13 million to €25 million).
