FG’s witness testifies in Nnamdi Kanu trial regarding death of Jonathan’s ex-aide linked to IPOB
In a significant development during the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a Federal Government witness known as BBB testified on Wednesday, presenting a certified true copy (CTC) of the death certificate for Ahmed Gulak. Gulak was allegedly murdered by IPOB members in 2012 for reportedly disobeying a sit-at-home order.
As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Gulak had previously served as the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan. The testimony took place in the Federal High Court in Abuja, where BBB, the second prosecution witness (PW-2), was shielded from public view while being examined by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, representing the government.
During the resumption of the hearing, Awomolo informed the court that he had a question for BBB, despite the session being scheduled for cross-examination. “We ask for permission to ask a question, my lord,” he stated.
Defense attorney Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not oppose this request, and Justice James Omotosho granted permission for the inquiry to proceed. Awomolo then asked BBB whether one of the last points he made was that Kanu’s radio broadcast had called for the sit-at-home order, leading to Gulak’s death. The witness confirmed this assertion.
BBB further indicated that he was involved in investigations related to Gulak’s death, presenting a police certificate dated July 18, 2021, as a certified true copy of the medical report concerning Gulak.
When the document was shown to Agabi, he had no objections, prompting Justice Omotosho to accept it as evidence and mark it as Exhibit PWJ. Awomolo subsequently requested that the document be read aloud in open court, to which BBB complied, stating it was issued by the Nigeria Police in Owerri, Imo, and described how Ahmed Gulak was allegedly shot dead by IPOB members.
After this segment of testimony, Agabi initiated his cross-examination of the witness.
