FG urges NUPENG to reconsider nationwide strike amid Dangote Group dispute
The Federal Government has called on the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to reconsider its decision to initiate a nationwide strike set to begin on Monday, September 8, 2025.
The dispute arises from the Dangote Group’s policy, which allegedly prevents its employees from associating with unions in the industry.
Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, issued the appeal in a statement, emphasizing the importance of the petroleum sector to Nigeria’s economy.
“I have invited all the parties for a conciliation meeting tomorrow,” Dingyadi stated. “I plead with NUPENG to rescind their decision to shut down the petroleum sector from tomorrow.”
He also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to retract the red alert issued to its affiliate unions, urging them to prepare for a nationwide strike in support of the petroleum workers.
“The petroleum sector is very important to this country. A strike in the sector, even for just a day, will have an adverse impact on the economy,” Dingyadi added. “I assure them that this matter will be resolved amicably.”
Meanwhile, NUPENG has reaffirmed its commitment to the planned industrial action, which responds to the alleged barring of its members from affiliation with labor unions by the Dangote Refinery.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has expressed support for NUPENG’s strike, contending that the Dangote Group’s policy violates various sections of the Nigerian Constitution, the Trade Union Act, and international agreements regarding workers’ rights.
