FG to airlines: No entry for any foreigner without valid visa

The Federal Government has sternly warned that airlines caught flying passengers into Nigeria without valid entry visas, Landing, and Exit cards will face serious sanctions.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this statement during a stakeholders’ engagement session in Lagos focused on the implementation of the E-Visa and related requirements. “Nigeria is not a dumping ground,” he declared, asserting that no foreigner should be granted entry without proper documentation.

He emphasized, “While we are making entry more accessible through the E-Visa, we will not compromise on national security.” The Minister called on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to enforce regulations that ensure airlines comply with the 2025 Nigeria Visa Policy.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted the airlines’ responsibility in upholding national security, insisting that checks for valid visas must be conducted prior to boarding. “Before anybody comes to Nigeria, please see their Visas, not a proof of payment or their tickets,” he stated, reiterating that such measures are standard in many countries like the UK and the US.

Speaking on the E-Visa’s benefits, he explained that it aims to strengthen border security, promote tourism, and encourage sustainable economic growth. As of May 22, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has processed 5,814 applications since the E-Visa’s introduction on May 1, with a majority approved.

Chris Najomo, Director-General of the NCAA, called the introduction of the E-Visa and its associated systems a significant stride forward for Nigeria’s air travel framework. “The E-Visa exemplifies our commitment to aligning with global best practices,” Najomo noted, emphasizing its role in enhancing traveler experiences and border control.

Closing the session, Kemi Nandap, Controller General of the NIS, urged for more inter-agency collaboration to ensure the smooth implementation of the E-Visa, Landing, and Exit cards.
