FG refutes claims of new admission age policy for JSS1

The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed claims in a recent report that the minimum age for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) has been increased to 12 years.

According to a statement released on Friday, the ministry said that such information is untrue and did not come from any legitimate source.

“Any suggestion that the minimum age has been raised is misleading and should be disregarded by the public and all education stakeholders,” the statement emphasized. The ministry reiterated that the existing minimum age for JSS1 admission remains at 10 years, clarifying that “no child should complete primary education below the age of 10.”

The statement also highlighted the importance of verifying information, urging educational institutions and media outlets to seek clarification from official channels before publishing unverified reports.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, however, confirmed that the established minimum age for admission to Nigerian universities is 16 years, emphasizing that this policy is consistent and non-negotiable, aimed at ensuring that students are adequately prepared for academic challenges.

The Federal Ministry of Education is committed to maintaining transparency and ensuring that educational policies align with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
