FG introduces new curriculum framework for basic, secondary, technical schools to improve educational quality
The federal government has unveiled a new curriculum framework aimed at minimizing content overload and enhancing the quality of education in basic, senior secondary, and technical schools.
Prof. Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, the Minister of State for Education, made the announcement on behalf of Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education.
She stated that the extensive review was conducted in collaboration with various key agencies within the ministry, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
“This new curriculum structure is designed to ensure a balance between subject offerings and practical, in-depth learning opportunities,” Ahmad explained in the statement.
At the primary level, students in Primary 1–3 will study 9 to 10 subjects, while those in Primary 4–6 will offer 10 to 12 subjects. Junior Secondary School students will have 12 to 14 subjects, Senior Secondary students will take 8 to 9 subjects, and technical schools will provide 9 to 11 subjects.
Ahmad emphasized, “The reforms aim to reduce content overload, provide students with more time to learn, and align our education system with contemporary global standards.”
She also expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their contributions during the review process and reassured that the ministry would implement strict monitoring measures to ensure a smooth transition and effective adoption across schools nationwide.
