NlC, FG meeting on proposed strike

In a bid to prevent a nationwide strike scheduled for October 3, the Federal Government is engaging in discussions with organised labour at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting, initiated by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is attended by key ministers.

Earlier, leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) had declared an indefinite strike from October 3, along with nationwide protests organized by their state chapters. Notably, the NLC had previously conducted a two-day warning strike without TUC’s participation.

Following these developments, the National Executive Council, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, appealed to organised labour to delay their strike plans. Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, echoed this plea, urging patience and dialogue between the organised labour and the Federal Government.

Governor Mutfwang also revealed that President Bola Tinubu would address the welfare concerns of Nigerian workers in his upcoming Independence Day broadcast. In response to these appeals, the President’s Chief of Staff convened a meeting, hoping to resolve the industrial dispute and avoid disruptions to the nation’s economic activities.
