FAAN clarifies incident involving ValueJet pilots, KWAM1 at Abuja Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed the recent episode at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where pilots from ValueJet reportedly violated safety protocols by attempting to depart without completing required pre-departure checks.

In a report by Daily Trust, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced that they have suspended two ValueJet pilots following what they described as a significant breach of aviation safety protocol. Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, confirmed that the pilots themselves notified the authority of the violation.

A short video clip shared on the NCAA’s X page (formerly Twitter) showed the aircraft, a CRJ-900ER with registration number 5N-BXS, taxiing from its bay while ground staff remained in close proximity, indicating it had not received clearance for departure. The video depicted some staff members fleeing as the pilots accelerated on the apron.

In response, ValueJet issued a statement acknowledging the mistake made by the crew and confirmed that the two pilots had been removed from duty.

FAAN elaborated on the circumstances, revealing that the incident involved a well-known Nigerian musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also referred to as K1 De Ultimate.

Initial investigations showed that the musician was set to board a scheduled morning flight to Lagos (Flight VK 201) when issues arose.

According to FAAN, the passenger attempted to carry an unidentified liquid on board, disregarding multiple warnings from Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel as well as the Flight Captain about the prohibition of liquids exceeding 100ml.

The individual reportedly refused to comply, which led to an altercation where he spilled the contents of a flask—later identified as alcohol—on an AVSEC officer.

FAAN’s statement detailed, “The Flight Captain intervened but faced similar resistance. After confirming that boarding was complete, she instructed the closure of the aircraft door.” It was noted that the passenger continued to resist leaving the area, necessitating intervention from the AVSEC crime unit for further inquiry.

FAAN emphasized its unwavering commitment to the safety and security of all passengers and airport personnel, stating, “We will not tolerate any actions that compromise operational integrity or undermine aviation safety standards, regardless of the individuals involved.”

The authority also confirmed that the situation is under thorough investigation, and those found at fault will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
