Ebonyi State government has paid the sum of N50million to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The huge sum of money was a fine for malpractices and de-recognition of 345 private, mission and public schools in the state.

This was done to ensure that students of the affected schools are able to register for WAEC this year.

This was confirmed by the state Commissioner for education, Dr Sunday Nwangele while communicating newsmen on the status quo.

Nwangele revealed that the Governor of the state, David Umahi approved the sum of money which was paid to the examination council.

The Informant247 recalls that the Governing Council of WAEC last year, 2022 derecognised 345 schools in the state on the ground of examination malpractices.

The Governing Council of the West African Examination body fined each of the schools N500,000 and other logistics for the conduct of external exams or miss the chances of registration for the exam for two consecutive years.

He said the state government has earlier persuaded the examination council to temper justice with mercy, adding that it does not support examination malpractices.

He noted that the state government had to comply with the status quo in the interest of the concerned schools, students and parents.

Nwangele revealed that 196 out of the affected schools are public schools while 149 are private schools.

He said none of the schools filled examination malpractice forms and therefore wondered how the story of examination malpractices suddenly emerged.
