Ebonyi Gov advocates practical education for self-reliance
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has emphasized the importance of universities and higher institutions offering courses that equip graduates with practical skills, enabling them to become self-reliant and contribute to society.
During an interview on Arise TV Morning Show, Governor Nwifuru expressed concern about the growing number of graduates who struggle to fend for themselves due to a lack of practical skills.
He stressed the need for an educational overhaul in Ebonyi State to prioritize practical education.
The governor, a graduate of Building Technology himself, highlighted the significance of practical education.
He stated, “I believe that the kind of education we should venture into is the type of education that should put food on our table. It’s not when you are taken to the laboratory you won’t be able to analyze some chemicals or do separation techniques.”
Governor Nwifuru emphasized the importance of aligning educational offerings with the job market’s demands.
He called for courses that equip graduates with the skills needed to secure employment or become self-employed, ultimately making them self-reliant.
He explained, “The courses that our university must offer are courses that must put food on the tables of graduates of such disciplines. Our society needs courses that can put food on our table, make our graduates skillfully positioned, make our graduates self-reliant, well equipped, and self-employed.”
Governor Nwifuru cited his own experience as an example, stating that practical skills acquired during his education enabled him to pursue self-employment successfully.
He urged universities to adapt their course offerings to meet the evolving needs of society and equip graduates with the skills required for self-reliance.
