Eating, drinking, smoking while driving can lead one to jail – LASTMA warns

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a warning to drivers that consuming food or drinks, as well as smoking while driving, is not only unsafe but can also result in significant legal consequences.

According to LASTMA, these actions are classified as punishable offences under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. The agency shared this message in a post on its official X handle to remind motorists of the importance of staying focused behind the wheel.

“Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence according to the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018,” LASTMA stated. The law aims to enhance road safety by mitigating distractions that could lead to accidents.

Violators of this law face a range of penalties, including having their vehicle impounded, a potential three-month imprisonment, or six months of community service, depending on the severity of the offence and the decision of the judiciary.

LASTMA’s reminder comes amid increasing accidents on the roads, emphasizing the essential need for drivers to prioritize safety and avoid distractions while driving.
