Customs officer’s stray bullet hit NURTW official in Jigawa

A 35-year-old member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has escaped death after a stray bullet was fired by the officers of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The incident happened while the officers of the Nigeria Customs Service were chasing rice smugglers in the Garki Local Government Area of Jigawa State hit him.

A source residing in the area said the incident occurred at Tashar Sama in Garki when the officers of the customs service were on the trail of suspected smugglers.

He narrated that one of the customs officers shot while running after a man who’re suspected to have smuggled foreign rice into Garki town.

“It was one of the stray bullets that hit the man, and the suspected smuggler had escaped,” he said.

The spokesperson of the police, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam has confirmed the incident to newsmen.

He revealed that the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 1030hrs when the personnel of Customs, on border drill patrol with their Hilux no. 16, were running after suspected foreign rice smugglers.

He narrated that when they reached a point at Tashar same in Garki town, they opened fire at one rice smuggler on his motorcycle, who was trying to run away from them.

He revealed that the stray bullet hit a 35-year-old NURTW member in their garage, in the process, and he got injured on his stomach.

Shiisu revealed the detectives were mobilized to the affected scene and hospitalized the victim to Garki Hospital for medical attention.

He revealed that the case is under investigation.
