Culpable homicide: Husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu sentenced to death by hanging
Barely 35 months after the death of popular gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has sentenced her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Nwachukwu was found guilty of culpable homicide in connection with his wife’s tragic passing on April 8, 2022.
In delivering the judgment, the judge stated that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Peter Nwachukwu was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, facing a total of 23 charges, which included culpable homicide punishable by death, spousal battery, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation.
The trial saw the prosecution call 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, and present 25 documents as evidence. In his defense, Nwachukwu testified and brought forth four additional witnesses, along with four of his own exhibits.
Before sentencing, his lawyer, Reginald Nwali, requested leniency, while the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to impose the maximum penalty.
In addition to the death sentence for culpable homicide, Nwachukwu received two years’ imprisonment for several other counts, six months for one count, and three years for another. He was also fined significant amounts for related charges.
