COVID-19: Kwara CJ frees 46 prison inmates

Following the ongoing attempt to decongest the custodial centres nationwide, the Kwara State Chief Judge, Justice Sulyman Kawu, has granted amnesty to 46 prison inmates at various custodian centres in the state.

This is in line with the Federal Government’s directives of April 1 that prison decongestion be carried out urgently as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19.

18 of the total number of the inmates who benefited from the gestures were released outrightly while others were granted bail but to continue facing their trials.

Kawu, while speaking with journalists, said the exercise of the prerogative of mercy was informed largely by the need to reduce population of inmates in the correctional centres in order to avoid the spread of the ravaging coronavirus.

He however, urged the freed inmates to be law abiding and ensure they contribute their quotas to the development of the state.

On his part, The state comptroller of correctional service, Adebisi Francis, commended the Kwara State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and the Chief Judge for exercising their prerogative power as enshrined in the section 212 of the constitution.

Among those released are; Muhammad Bello, Subair Umar, Muhammed Detua, Fatai Akanbi, Ibrahim Moshood, Olumide Sadiq, Ibrahim Opeyemi, Rafiu Jimoh, Michael Eniola, Sanni Ambali, Yekini Idris, Ibrahim Adamu, Yusuf Abdullah, Koko Emmanuel, Mojid Salaudeen, Bashiru Sanmi, Ahmed Popoola, Emmanuel omotayo

Recall that the state government had earlier set free 101 inmates in correctional centres across the state.
