Court sentences trader to one-year imprisonment for stealing food, household items

A trader, Yasir Adam, has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment by a Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos for stealing food and household items worth N 141, 000.

The Chief Magistrate Joseph Chollom, sentenced Adam after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Chollom, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N50, 000.

The magistrate also ordered the convict to pay N141, 000 as compensation to the complainant, Jabiru Mohammed.

Earlier the Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Karimu Bashiru told the court that the case was reported by Mohammed, who resides in Rayfield in Jos, at the Anglo Jos Police Station on Dec. 14, 2021.

He said the convict on Dec. 7, 2021 by 1.00 pm, in company of two others who are presently at large, broke into Mohammed’s house and stole ten liters of palm oil, one cartoon of pasta, a gas burner, a set of plates and spoons, a home theatre.

The police prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 59,336 and 272 of the Plateau Penal Code Law. (NAN)
