Court sentences carpenter to 12 months imprisonment over stealing, house breaking
A 21-year old carpenter, Isaac Dawang, was on Monday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for invading a man’s shop and dispossessing him of his generator, game station and plasma television all worth N250,000.
He was sentenced by an Area Court sitting in Jos.
Adam Sadiq and Hyacinth Dolnaan, the panel of two magistrates who made the pronouncement after Dawang pleaded guilty to the charge.
The panel however, gave him an option to make payment of N20,000 fine.
They also directed the convict to make a payment of N50,000 compensation to the complainant and failure to do so will amount to 1 month stay in prison.
The court established that the judgment would serve as lesson to those who who would want to involve themselves in such criminal acts.
Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, the prosecution Counsel, earlier, informed the court that the matter was in Oct. 19 brought to the awareness of the law enforcement agency at the Rantya Police station by the complainant, one Ejiro Steven.
The prosecutor added that the convict invaded the house of the complainant and dispossessed the victim of his items worth N250,000 before he was arrested and items were recovered and returned to the complainant.
The Prosecutor also said the offence was in violation of section 336 and 272 of the Plateau Penal Code Laws.
