Court remands former APC chairman in prison

A court has sentenced a former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC in Jigawa State Habibu Sara to prison over alleged defamation of character.

Report has it that Sara allegedly defamed the character of the Governor of the State, Muhammad Badaru while expressing his views on a radio session.

The Informant247 recalls that the police arrested the APC chieftain and dragged him to court.

The Court ordered his remand in prison on Thursday May 4th over defamation of character.

The APC chieftain reportedly challenged the Governor of the State Badaru, accusing him of championing a meeting in Saudi Arabia with some political actors where they made plans to destabilize the incoming government of Umar Namadi — the newly elected Governor of the State.

He said: “The governor has already bought vehicles to be distributed to the commissioners of the incoming administration. He should not be doing this because it’s not his responsibility to purchase vehicles for the new administration.”

“For the past eight years, he (Governor Badaru) bought 200 vehicles whose transactions and distribution were shrouded in secrecy. We are demanding an explanation,” Sara claimed in the radio programmes.

In response, a media to the Governor, Habibu Muhammad called on the police to effect the arrest of the APC chieftain Sara and one other alleged to be defaming the character of his boss — the Governor of the State.

“The above allegations are false and are intended to defame the character of the governor of Jigawa and his servants, including myself (Muhammad) and to incite public disturbance and disharmony in the governance of the state and between Jigawa State and the incoming governor.

“It’s against this background that I write this complaint to urge you to investigate the matter and bring the culprit to book if found wanting in violation of the law,” Muhammed wrote to the police.

The Magistrate Auwal Balago charged Sara and Jahun with an attempt to destabilize public peace and cause disorder and defamation of character.

The two pleaded not guilty but the Magistrate directed that they should be remanded in a correctional facility till May 8 for the hearing.
