Coup: Diaspora Nigerians warn against military action in Niger Republic, urge focus on domestic issues
In response to recent developments surrounding potential military action against Niger Republic, the Global Nigerian Diaspora Forum (GNDF), representing Diaspora Nigerians, has voiced concerns about the proposed course of action.
The GNDF, comprised of figures such as Chief Emmanuel Tam Ezekiel-Hart, Dr Ifem Emmanuel Orji, Prof Mondy Gold, and Hon. Gesiere Brisibe-Dorgu, issued a statement urging President Bola Tinubu to reconsider any moves that could endanger Nigeria’s security.
Highlighting the absence of external threats originating from Niger Republic, the GNDF emphasized that the Nigerian territory currently remains unthreatened.
The Forum underscored the significance of Nigeria’s sovereign power held by elected representatives under the executive presidential system.
It stressed that the exercise of this power must not jeopardize the nation’s stability.
Referring to the supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution in guiding presidential and legislative actions, the GNDF expressed its intent to challenge any secretive arrangements leading to the deployment of Nigerian military forces to Niger Republic.
The Forum cited the Constitution’s provisions under sections 1, 4(2), 5(4)(a), and 5(4)(b), stating that the conditions for national security threats are not met in the current context.
The GNDF called upon the National Assembly to reject any proposal for military intervention in Niger Republic.
Instead, it advocated for a focus on strengthening border security and addressing internal security challenges posed by Boko Haram, bandits, and unidentified gunmen.
Drawing parallels to historical experiences of war, the Forum urged President Tinubu to prioritize addressing domestic needs over foreign military endeavors.
With a stance aligned with peaceful resolution, the GNDF recommended mediating for dialogue and political settlement in the region rather than resorting to armed conflict.
It emphasized that Nigeria’s identity and pride should not be compromised by external interests.
As tensions escalate, the GNDF emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s role in safeguarding Nigeria’s interests.
The Forum urged the Judiciary to remain vigilant and prepared to intervene if decisions are made that could potentially harm the nation’s security and stability.
In summary, the GNDF’s statement underscores the need to focus on domestic security issues while cautioning against rushing into foreign military actions that might not yield positive outcomes.
The Forum advocates for a measured approach that preserves Nigeria’s sovereignty and prioritizes the well-being of its citizens.
