Conviction of Simon Ekpa marks historic victory in global counter-terrorism efforts – CDS

General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has hailed the conviction of Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court, asserting that the ruling reinforces the accountability of those who incite violence and fund terrorism, regardless of their geographical position.

On Monday, the Päijät-Häme District Court sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison for terrorism-related offenses.

In response to the judgment, Musa stated, “This ruling is a landmark victory in the global effort to combat terrorism and violent extremism, affirming that no individual or group sponsoring terrorism against Nigeria will find a haven.”

The statement from the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, further emphasized Musa’s sentiments: “The conviction reinforces the principle that those who incite violence and fund terrorism will be held accountable.”

General Musa expressed gratitude to Nigerian security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies, as well as diplomats, for their collaborative efforts in providing actionable evidence leading to Ekpa’s conviction. He remarked, “The success reflects the power of international cooperation in addressing transnational threats.”

Reaffirming the dedication of the Armed Forces, Musa called for continued collaboration with global partners to dismantle terrorist networks. He also urged all Nigerians to stay vigilant and support security operations against insurgency and violent separatist movements, emphasizing, “Together, we can ensure lasting peace and security across Nigeria.”
