Cancer: 1,151 women screened in three months, says Kwara govt
No fewer than 1,151 women have been successfully screened for breastfeeding and cervical cancers, while 807 others were also captured in the last three months, the Kwara State Government has disclosed.
Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, while disclosing this at a quarterly Inter-Ministerial press briefing in Ilorin on Tuesday, explained that “all suspicious breast lesions had Fine Needle Aspirate for Cytology (FNAC) done.
El-Imam also disclosed that other individuals with diagnosed cases were directed to the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH), Ilorin, for proper medical attention from experts.
The Commissioner furthered that the Ministry, under Project 10m, screened 102,452 Kwarans for hypertension while free drugs were administered to individuals with the disease.

She, however, emphasised the government’s commitment to providing qualitative and affordable healthcare services to all Kwarans and also creating an enabling environment for the entire health workers.
El-Imam, who disclosed that the government had embarked on the comprehensive renovation of both primary and secondary healthcare facilities across the state, assured that they would soon be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment to ensure that those facilities adequately serve the public.
Highlighting the Ministry’s achievements within the quarter under review, El-Imam explained that the Ministry implemented Project 10m across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state, adding that the project ensures free screening of hypertension and diabetes patients, distribution of drugs and proper sensitisation of Kwarans on two major non-communicable diseases, hypertension and diabetes.
She further revealed that health workers across primary, secondary and tertiary health facilities were trained to diagnose hypertension and diabetes.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Press Briefing and state Commissioner for Communications, Hon Bola Olukoju, explained that the purpose of the briefing is to inform the public about government activities in 4th quarter of the year, where the headship of all MDAs is allowed to provide stewardship of the various government establishment.
