Cabinet reshuffle: Yilwatda replaces suspended humanitarian minister Edu as Wike, Edun, others retain position

In a cabinet reshuffle, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday announced Dr Nentawe Yilwatda as the minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to replace former minister Betta Edu, who was, in January, suspended by the president for allegedly transferring N585.2 million into the private bank account of a civil servant, who is the accountant in charge of grants for Vulnerable Nigerians.

The president, after the suspension, also asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to carry out a “thorough investigation” of all the ministry’s financial transactions.”

The investigation extended to the entire framework of Nigeria’s social investment programmes.

Edu has denied any wrongdoing.

Her office said at the time that she had approved the transfer into a personal account for the “implementation of grants to vulnerable groups.”

The office of the Accountant General of the Federation said such funds were meant to be sent directly from government accounts to the beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, Dele Alake, and his Solid Minerals counterpart were not affected in the cabinet reshuffle of President Bola Tinubu.

Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, also retained their portfolios.

Tinubu had approved the restructuring of ministries as part of efforts to boost his administration’s performance.

The Informant247 had earlier reported that the president had sacked five ministers as part of his cabinet reshuffling while thanking them for their service to the nation and wishing them the best in their future endeavours.

Some ministers were reassigned new portfolios, and others maintained the status quo.

He charged the newly appointed ministers as well as their reassigned colleagues to see their appointment as a call to serve the nation, stressing that all appointees must understand the administration’s eagerness and determination to set Nigeria on the path to irreversible growth and invest the best of their abilities into the actualisation of the
government’s priorities.
