BREAKING: Keir Starmer resigns as UK prime minister
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as leader of the Labour Party and prime minister, ending a turbulent period marked by mounting pressure from within his party.
In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he had listened to the views of Labour members and lawmakers on his leadership and had decided to step aside.
“I have heard the answer and I accept it with good grace,” he said.
Starmer’s resignation follows weeks of internal unrest within the Labour Party after poor electoral performances and growing calls from MPs and senior party figures for a change in leadership.
Attention has now shifted to Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester and newly elected MP for Makerfield, who is widely viewed as a leading contender to replace Starmer. Burnham secured victory in a recent by-election and is expected to play a central role in Labour’s leadership transition.
Starmer led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, returning the party to power after years in opposition. However, declining approval ratings, internal divisions and a series of political setbacks weakened his position in recent months.
Further details are expected as the Labour Party begins the process of selecting a new leader.
