Brain Builders Initiative unveils platform to monitor state government activities in Nigeria
In its bid to foster accountability and transparency in governance, a non-governmental organisation, Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative(BBYDI) has launched ‘YouthGovTracka’ platform.
‘YouthGovTracka’, a citizen Accountability toolkit is an empowerment tool, aimed at guiding the citizens in demanding their rights from the government.
The initiative which will be operational across the 36 states of the federation is expected to foster informed demands and propels responsible governance.
Speaking at the groundbreaking of the platform on Thursday in Ilorin, Abideen Opeyemi Olasupo, the Global Director of Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative (BBYDI),stated that the initiative was launched in order to entrench democratic principles especially at the sub-national level.
Describing it as an ‘imbalance’, he noted the urgency to deepen the checks on the state government activities, saying that much attention has been fixated on the federal government at the expense of an all inclusive transparency expected of the States.
“The unveiling of YouthGovTracka marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s quest for accountable governance. It is a testament to the shared responsibility to reshape democracy, empower youth, uplift marginalized communities, and establish effective governance.
“The initiative’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in the translation of its materials into diverse local languages, ensuring accessibility for all citizens. Additionally, monthly published scorecards will transparently evaluate state governors’ performances, providing an honest evaluation visible to all”
While it’s not limited to oversight; the initiative also targets proactive engagement in the demand for an inclusive delivery and accountability from state leaders.
“The launch of YouthGovTracka presents a watershed moment in Nigeria’s democracy, steering the nation towards a future marked by transparency, accountability, and effective governance at the state level” he stated
A total number of 36 youths(focal persons) , armed with the technical knowledge have been entrusted with a clear mandate—to monitor, question, and advocate for accountability in governance across the states of the federation.
“The thematic areas include prioritizing youth voice in governance, support young candidates, creating safe civic spaces, developing participatory mechanisms, supporting civil society organisations, and investing in civic education”.
For BBYDI, the unveiling of ‘YouthGovTracka’ heralds a shift in paradigm and a visionary effort to bridge the gap between the aspirations of Nigeria’s youth and the actions of state governors. The project is also positioned as an innovative online platform, a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change.
BBYDI is also committed to other visionary programs around climate change, educational development and youth mentorship.
