The Commissioner for Youth Development in Kwara State, Hon. Harriet Afolabi Oshatimehin on Thursday paid fines for the release of six inmates in the Okekura Correctional Centre in Ilorin.

The commissioner, who bought equipment for freed inmates with vocational training, also disburses materials to others to mark her 40th birthday.

Oshatimehin while addressing the inmates admonished them to always be thankful to God for the gift of life, saying “when there’s life there’s hope”.

She said, “I thank you for the warm reception, for the birthday wishes and prayers. From my discussions with the management of this facility, I was reminded that there’s a workshop for vocational training here at the correctional center, and in view of this; I bring to you equipment and gadgets that would get you productively engaged as you are about leaving here now.

“This is to ensure you do not return back to crime because an idle hand is the devil’s workshop. I indulge you to use these tools to fend for yourself and assist others.”

In his reaction, the Officer in Charge of the Correctional Center, ACC Abiola Adebanjo said, “If horses can ride in my belly honestly they will never stumble, this is just to show you how happy and how my heart is filled with joy. Since I’ve been in charge of this yard I’ve not seen anything like this. I sincerely appreciate the kind gestures and love that you have shown to the youth in this correctional center. You’re indeed a blessing to this generation and this government. Thank you and God bless you.”

Meanwhile, Oshatimehin also visited the Ilorin General hospital to foot the medical bills of children born on Thursday.

Oshatimehin briefly addressing parents of the newborn babies said, “Children are the heritage of the Lord, I feel delighted to be here this morning to support financially the parents of the newborn as I’ve always done. I want to say big congratulations to the parents of the newborn, and also want to encourage them to please follow the instructions of the medical personnel to the latter. I pray that the newborn usher in good tidings into your household.”

She also provides support for patients at the Intensive Care Unit.
