Bandits’ attacks: KWASU suspends relocation of Agric faculty to Ilesha-Baruba
Following the wake of insecurity in the northern part of Kwara, the management of the Kwara State University (KWASU) has suspended its scheduled relocation of its new Faculty of Agriculture to the Ilesha-Baruba campus.
The directive was issued in a memo signed by the Registrar of the institution, Dr. Kikelomo W. Sallee on Thursday, April 24, 2025, to the concerned faculty.
It would be recalled that the Faculty of Agriculture had been scheduled to commence the Rain semester at the Ilesha-Baruba campus.
According to the memo, the new date for the relocation would be communicated to the faculty in due course.
There has been a growing tension in the northern part of Kwara State following a report of attacks by the armed bandits
On Tuesday, 22nd April, 2025, the state police command confirmed that no fewer than six persons have been killed in Baruten and Kaiama local government areas of Kwara State following a deadly attacks by gunmen, suspected to be bandits.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the first incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Monday, April 21, when suspected armed assailants stormed the Ilesha Baruba Motor Park and opened fire on civilians at a nearby relaxation spot. Six persons—identified as Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, Mohammed Nasamu, and three others—were killed in the attack, while two others sustained serious injuries.
The deceased have been taken to the Ilesha Baruba Morgue for autopsy, and the injured are receiving treatment. Police authorities say investigations are underway, and security measures have been heightened in the area to prevent further violence.
However, the Ilesha Baruba Emirate Council in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State on Wednesday, announced the cancellation of the popular Kara Market day, originally scheduled to hold on Thursday, April 24, 2025 (today).
The decision comes after a bandit attack on Monday, 20th April, 2025, which is a market day in the community. The attack caused panic, left some casualties and disrupted normal activities in the community.
Kara Market, known as one of the largest cattle markets in the region, usually draws traders and buyers from within and outside Baruten Local Government Area. It serves as a major hub for cattle trade, livestock products, and other economic activities.
Due to security concerns and the need to protect lives and property, the Emirate decided to suspend the market for now. Security in the area has since been increased, and authorities are working to prevent further attacks.
