Baboko market traders protest plan to convert parking space to shops in Ilorin

Traders under the aegis of the Association of Provision, Food and Household Items Sellers, Baboko Market, have appealed to AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to urgently intervene in a proposed plan to construct shops on the market’s parking space.

In a letter addressed to the Governor and signed by Muritala Yusuf, the association raised concerns over the decision by the Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government, Babatunde Ladan, describing the move as ill-conceived and detrimental to their livelihoods.

The traders argued that the parking space at Baboko Market, Ojatuntun area of Ilorin, remains a critical component of the market’s infrastructure, facilitating the smooth flow of goods and human traffic.

They explained that converting the space into shops would worsen congestion, disrupt commercial activities, and negatively impact both buyers and sellers.

According to the association, despite the substantial revenue generated from the market and consistent tax payments to both the state and local governments, essential infrastructure such as intra-market roads and drainage systems remain in poor condition.

While expressing confidence in the Governor’s leadership, the association commended his commitment to delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Kwara State and urged him to safeguard the market’s viability.
