Amaechi opens up, says Coronavirus stalls Lagos-Ibadan rail project

The Honourable Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi revealed on Friday, that the deadline set for completion of the Lagos-Ibadan is no longer feasible, owing to the reality that Chinese workers had not returned to the country due to Coronavirus outbreak in their country.

The 150-kilometre long railway line connecting economic hub Lagos to the city of Ibadan is contracted to the state-owned China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

“Most of the Chinese workers who went on their New Year holiday have not yet returned due to the coronavirus and this has delayed the work,” minister Rotimi Amaechi added.

The over N5.4 trillion project — slated to be completed in May — has faced serious delays since it first deadline in 2012.

Since its outbreak four months ago, the Chinese city of Wuhan, the deadly disease has infected over 100,000 people and killed more than 3,400.

The project, when completed was said, would immensely contribute to the economic prosperity of the country as it would lift goods from Lagos to other southern axes of the country.
