Akpabio urges continued oversight as senators begin two-month recess

The Senate on Thursday, announced its its annual long recess, adjourning plenary sessions until Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, announced the break following the adoption of a motion by the Leader of the Red Chamber, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central), during a brief session.

Akpabio emphasized that the lawmakers are not completely off duty during this period. “You are expected to continue with your oversight functions over various ministries, departments, and agencies, especially projects being executed in your constituencies across the country,” he stated.

He urged all standing and ad hoc committees to use this two-month period effectively to wrap up their assignments, enabling easier legislative consideration and adoption upon their return. “Each committee will be expected to submit a report on its oversight activities to the Senate upon resumption,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President, however, called on senators to attend the burial of Senator Diket Plang’s wife, which is set to take place on Friday in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
