Against public outcry, VDM not above the law to be detained – EFCC confirms arrest
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of prominent rights activist and social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The anti-graft agency released a statement on its X handle on Tuesday, explaining that Otse’s arrest followed numerous petitions concerning serious allegations of financial malfeasance.
According to the EFCC, Otse had “refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him through his known addresses and medium of communication”. The Commission emphasized its commitment to tackling economic and financial crimes, stating, “the petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the Commission.”
In response to public outcry over Otse’s detention, the EFCC clarified that it has the lawful right to hold him in custody, noting, “The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard. He has been offered an administrative bail and would be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions.”
As investigations continue, the EFCC assured the public that charges would be filed once they are concluded, urging, “The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour.”
In a notable demonstration of public support, scores of youths protested in Abuja against Otse’s arrest on Monday, demanding his release. The demonstrators carried placards with messages such as “Release Very Dark Man” and “Seyi Tinubu, Are You Involved?”.
High-profile figures including former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have condemned the arrest, labeling it as an abuse of power and expressing concerns over the implications of such actions for civil liberties in Nigeria.
Additionally, music star Davido took to social media to express his support for VDM, saying, “FREE MY GUY,” highlighting the widespread admiration and concern for the influencer within the community.
