Activists demand arrest of ruthless gang that burnt woman alive on witchcraft allegation
Citizens’ Solution Network and Agba Jalingo Foundation for Investigative and Accountability Journalism are urging the police in Cross River State to take immediate action and apprehend the terror gang responsible for the horrific murder of Mrs. Martina Okey Itagbor.
The two activist groups have made these demands following their claims that the 14-man gang has been engaged in acts of jungle justice in the New Netim community of Akamkpa Local Government Area for a significant period.
According to the allegations, this ruthless gang not only mutilated Mrs. Itagbor by chopping off her fingers but also set her ablaze on a major road just a few days ago, all based on the accusation of witchcraft.
The perpetrators falsely held her responsible for a tragic car accident that claimed the life of a mother with two boys in the community.
In a joint statement signed by Agba Jalingo, one of the leaders, the activist groups express their strong condemnation of the extrajudicial killing and categorize the gang as misguided and bloodthirsty.
Their primary objective is to ensure that justice is served for Mrs. Martina Okey Itagbor, demanding that the police command rise to the occasion and prevent further killings of elderly women who are defenseless in the face of hostility from unexpected quarters.
The statement emphasizes the urgent need to protect the older and vulnerable female population from acts of summary torture, humiliation, and killings.
The activists emphasize that these individuals must be safeguarded from such brutality and call upon the police to bring the perpetrators to justice, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
