‘A spontaneous and playful twist’: Remi Tinubu responds to nursing students’ viral video
The office of Nigeria’s first lady, Remi Tinubu, has commented on the viral video involving students from the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, which captured a lighthearted moment during her recent visit. The incident arose when students reacted to the first lady being introduced as a “national mother” by singing, “na your mama be this,” a playful retort that has sparked considerable discussion.
On March 27, during a solidarity programme at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba targeted at healthcare workers, Tinubu oversaw the distribution of 10,000 kits to midwives in the south-south region. The introduction by the event host prompted an unexpected response from the students, who seemed to challenge the title in a humorous manner.
Following the event, the institution had issued a query to the student who recorded the video, labeling their actions as a “malicious act.” However, this query was later withdrawn. In a statement from Busola Kukoyi, senior special assistant on media to the first lady, the viral video was acknowledged, with the students’ chants characterized as a “spontaneous and playful twist” to the welcome song.
Remi Tinubu expressed her appreciation for the reception from the Delta state government, healthcare professionals, and the community. While recognizing the institution’s right to enforce discipline, her office emphasized the importance of allowing students the freedom to express themselves. They urged the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to approach the matter with “fairness and understanding,” ensuring a balance between discipline and free expression.
