255 schools benefit from 14,180 economic tree seedling initiative in Kwara

The Kwara State Government, in partnership with the Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), has kicked off the distribution of 14,180 economic tree seedlings to 255 educational institutions across the state.

This initiative aims to enhance both educational and economic prospects within the schools.

During the launch, Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development, Mrs. Mary Arinde, stated, “The beneficiaries include 80 primary schools, 170 secondary schools, and five tertiary institutions. This initiative highlights the critical link between education and agriculture.”

The schools received various seedlings, including cocoa, cashew, oil palm, and orange trees. Arinde explained that these orchards would serve as practical learning tools, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with agricultural practices.

She remarked, “These orchards will not only teach students about crops and their products but also serve as research plantations for tertiary institutions.”

Moreover, she added that local government chairmen have the opportunity to select two schools each to benefit from this initiative, further involving the community in promoting agricultural education.

Looking ahead, Arinde noted that this project could provide a revenue stream for schools, enabling further investments in agricultural ventures such as animal husbandry and fisheries.

She commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his commitment to food security and appreciated the efforts of the ACReSAL team in delivering the seedlings.

Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the need to protect the trees once planted. He stated, “These trees are vital for preserving the learning environment in our schools.”
