207 died, 500 injured in Mokwa flooding tragedy – NSEMA
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that 207 individuals have lost their lives due to the recent flooding that has devastated two communities in Mokwa.
Director General Abdullahi Baba Arah shared these alarming statistics during a press briefing in Minna, detailing the agency’s ongoing efforts to address the impacts of various disasters throughout the state.
Arah reported that around 500 people sustained injuries during the floods, and the current number of missing persons has yet to be determined.
He highlighted the agency’s assistance by providing financial aid of N500,000 to victims whose homes were destroyed, helping them secure new accommodations. This support is part of a broader initiative to distribute food and relief materials to ease the plight of those affected.
In his address, Arah emphasized the importance of community awareness and preparedness, stating, “To mitigate flood risks in vulnerable areas, we have launched our annual flood sensitization and early warning campaigns across the eight emirate councils of Niger State. We urge residents living along waterways to relocate to safer locations.” He added, “These efforts aim to increase public awareness and reduce flood risks through community engagement and educational materials.”
Alongside flood interventions, Arah mentioned NSEMA’s continuous support for victims of residential and commercial fires, addressing serious incidents, including the dynamite explosion at Sabon Pegi and the Diko and Agaie tanker explosions.
Arah expressed his appreciation for the support of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, which has empowered the agency to fulfill its responsibilities. He also acknowledged the vital roles played by traditional institutions, community leaders, volunteers, and humanitarian partners in these efforts.
“Our focus remains on swift and effective disaster response while promoting risk reduction and resilience in all communities,” Arah concluded.
